Goldfish was originally written about a parent at a loss for the right answer in reply to his child's question of "why did the goldfish die"? It was an actual situation that happened to me many years ago.

The original lyrics were "why did my goldfish have to die" but I thought it was too inside baseball, so I changed I to "everyone"

Still called it Goldfish though. Loved the title.

The rest of the lyrics are just a reflection of not having the right answer to the original question. The song really isn't about what happens when you die, it's more about how difficult it is to live.
